My drawings began simply as a tool to help me see the three-dimensional work. I was making phenomena: tornados, smoke effluent, stormy water, volcanoes, etc. The drawings helped me understand the correct contours, negative space and textures of those things, which, while they lackĀ material existence, are still oddly substantial and real. They soon ended up with a life of their own and I started to exhibit them. They are made with oil stick (primarily black), and the trace of my hand remains clearly evident as I rarely use a brush.
