Left Behind But Not Forgotten
I am a conceptually based sculptor, mixed media and installation artist. I also draw and paint often recycling images I have found or have seen in my head. I enjoy the complexity and challenge of working in multiple mediums and media.
Each discarded or cast-off object, (almost always broken as I can’t make “working” objects better) chosen with careful consideration, undergoes a complex reconstruction which aims to free the material from its former narrative or refer its past history to fit my current idea. It becomes a form of restoration and brings an intimacy to the everyday object that gets lost amongst the mass accumulation of consumerism. And though my work does not dent the waste created by the ever-present demand for the new, it has helped me justify my creative passion. I view these works, in part, as an attempt to slow the process down, if only symbolically. Still, the theme remains: something new is once again recycled from the old meanings that consciousness has left behind but not forgotten.
About the Artist
Peter McFarlane is an award winning artist, whose work is in public and private collections nationally and internationally. Over his career he has worked in a wide variety of mediums particularly in the re-purposing of used objects. What connects all of his work is the re-contextualizing of obsolete everyday objects to create personal philosophies which he hopes will resonate with the viewer on a visceral and/or intellectual level and open up the possibility of a new conceptual experience. He relies on long hours, personal experience, history, landfill, perseveration, recycling and serendipity to make his art.
